Controversy Kills is an American rock band, formed in 2005 in Boston, Massachusetts when multi instrumentalist Hicks of the band Living Chaos wrote and recorded a homemade album based on a relationship gone sour and later added guitarist/vocalist Rhiannon Brown and bassist Kara Ellison to the sessions. His decision proved to be a stroke of luck when the band turned out to become one of the most sought after rock acts of 2006, "...introducing punk, with a slight flare for emo, acoustic, indie, with elements of trance to the preening pretentiousness of rock", most notably due to their influential debut effort Simple Ways of Saying Goodbye (2005). They have gained appreciation and critical praise for a complex and ever-evolving sound that ranges from "hard and soft" indie punk rock to trance hip hop. Not one particular genre eludes them as they strive to include every musical element they possess into their sound. As of October 2005 the band consisted of Hicks (Guitar/Drums/Keyboards/Vocals),Kara Ellison (Bass/Guitar/Vocals), Rhiannon Brown (Guitar/Vocals) and tour drummer Phil Tyson (Drums) later removed from the band in early 2006. December 2005 the band added Kadence Rain (Keyboards/Guitar/Vocals), and completed work on their debut CD released in late 2005. The album as a whole consisted of 15 tracks with 12 done by Hicks alone playing every instrument; something Hicks doesn't want to repeat on their next release due out late 2006. Their music has been influenced by The Beatles, Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, Blur, Pearl Jam, Ani Difranco, Tool, Queen, NIN, Butch Walker, The Get Up Kids, Run DMC, Bright Eyes, Double Drive, Weezer, Green Day, The Clash, Ryan Adams, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Grandmaster Flash, James Blunt and Postal Service, among several others.

History

In January 2006, while CK was working on tour plans, Hicks started work on the new demos that would become Sex Is My Weapon of Choice, an unreleased album that was reported to be made on a bet by Kara to Hicks that he wasn't able to make a hardcore/screamo album in the lines of Living Chaos. Within two weeks the album was written and recorded all by Hicks at his home studios in Hartford, Connecticut. Though this album won't be released since according to Hicks it wasn’t a band effort like how he wants it to be on all future recordings, there is talk of playing some of the songs live as they have become favorites of Kara's. As of March 2006 the band has made most of the demos that will be their sophomore effort, A Prelude To A Distortion and will be embarking on a summer tour of the USA and then on a tour of Europe that will run from October 2006 to February 2007. Its been reported that Hicks has over 800 demos recorded ,that most easily could be used on any album ,though with the pace Hicks writes new material its highly unlikely that any of this will see the light of day. With a band that has each member capable of writing great material, there isn’t a need for Hicks to write a full album anymore and this is something that he wants to bask in. With their heartbreak stories and their views of the world CK seems destined for something great even if it’s just to be the band with no genre.
