I started out in a
small town in northern England doing what every
normal introverted girl did. We listened to Bowie,
Kate Bush (stolen from my Mum), The Waterboys, Echo
and the Bunnymen, New Order, Duran Duran but only
secretly, and god a thousand others that I'd have
to call my Mum and have her sort through the vinyl
still in my wardrobe and get her to read names.
I better not forget Earth Wind and Fire (stolen
from my Dad). All of which my family had to suffer
through me hanging out of my second story bedroom
window singing at the top of my lungs. By the early
nineties I was living in Seattle and fell in love
with The Breeders, Belly, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau
Twins, The Pixies, Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips.
Then I went on a bit of a hippy fling and revisited
the music of the seventies - let's just say they
were good times! Joni Mitchell inspired me to pick
up my first guitar. I am partial to only one eighties
rock band - no names necessary!! xxx Well there
are a couple more. I can't stand it when people
say that the music today sucks and it's not what
it used to be. Damien Rice, Imogen Heap, Elliot
Smith, Black Eyed Peas, The Killers, Yeah yeah yeahs,
Gnarls Barkley, Beth Hart, Nikka Costa what's your
problem?? So I find myself in Nashville and once
again I am blessed with new ( to me) music to take
me to new places.....Mindy Smith, Dolly Parton,
Alison Krauss, Johnny Cash and Patty Griffin to
name but a few. I sing to feel found - I listen
to forget.
I can't imagine what possessed me to get involved
in music. Maybe my complete obsession, maybe my
genes - dad didn't get his turn, maybe my need for
love and attention - and harsh criticism and lots
of rejection or maybe just my obsession. Yeah definitely
my obsession - eat breath and sleep music of all
genres and all kinds, sing everything, play in horrible
punk bands wearing your underwear, have a phase
where your hair is forest green, write poetry, play
the guitar, have issues, get yourself a boyfriend
with some equipment ( you know what I mean) and
well there you go...that's my recipe. I stopped
writing music for a while and joined a cult - not
doing what you love can get to you that way. No
seriously - I came back to music with the goal of
writing for other people which I still do but found
myself plucking certain songs out of the catalog
for myself......and I didn't really mean that thing
about the equipment I do have my own.
