Tam Lin Music is a catch-all
name for songs written and performed by Paul Weinfield.
Paul is an active performer in the downtown New
York City folk-rock scene, where he plays with a
revolving group of backing musicians. His songs
have been compared to those of David Byrne, Jeff
Buckley, Nick Drake, and Sufjan Stevens. They mix
poetic lyrics with unusual, dark harmonies and melodic
ideas reminiscent of older jazz tunes. The centerpiece
of Pauls style, though, is his voice, which combines
the lyrical precision of spoken-word poetry with
the range and intensity of rock.
Paul has been writing songs
and playing music since he was ten years old. He
is the son of a poet and classical composer, and
has always been interested in finding new ways to
fit words and music together. Growing up, he was
drawn to an eclectic range of influences from Smithsonian-era
folk ballads to modal jazz from the 1960s to post-punk
(Patti Smith, the Talking Heads) to old Tin Pan
Alley standards. After playing guitar, bass, and
singing in various high school bands, he began to
devote himself seriously to the craft of songwriting.
He sees private writing and public playing as mirror
images of each other, rewriting songs as he performs
them and covering a wide array of songs from various
traditions.
Tam Lin Musics EP, Floating
World (self-released, 2006, available through CD
Baby (www.cdbaby.com/cd/tamlinmusic)
is Pauls first effort at mixing more ambient instrumentation
with a folk sensibility, in which he wrote all parts
and played all instruments. Paul is currently getting
ready to record a full-length CD of new songs that
will make more use of collaborations with other
musicians.
